Prologue It has been a thousand years since the Great War and there remain yet glowing areas where humankind and their kin dare not go, areas that contain demented growth and terrible creatures. It is into this world that THE WANDERER has come. A world where humankind hides in terror at night, and scavenges what they can during the day to stave off starvation. A few scattered tribes of humankind survive on the plains of Nev, an area protected by a ring of volcanic mountains on two sides, the Great Ice to the far North and the impassable River Col to the South. These barriers prevent the demented and deformed mutations left by the wars of the Before People from invading this last bastion of humankind. Even here, in this protected place, humankind has not completely escaped the mutations, for among them abide the far speakers and the shifters. The far speakers are those who can project their minds in communication to others without speaking, sometimes even to those far beyond sight. The shifters have the ability to cloak their bodies to resemble some other creature. Most shifters find it easiest to cloak themselves to resemble humankind's steadfast companions, the canines.
